A trial excavation was undertaken on 7 August 1986, close to the site of Rathcoffey Castle. The purpose of the excavation was to test for any archaeological remains in advance of the construction of a private dwelling. It was funded by the landowner.
Three parallel trenches, each 0.6m wide and between 20m and 30m long, were excavated by a mechanical digger to natural subsoil level. The trenches were located between 100m and 130m east of the surviving castle gatehouse. Apart from a pit, with a natural spring at the bottom, no archaeological features were uncovered. The pit was filled with loose rubble including fragments of red brick, mortar, slates and a sherd of modern pottery and glass.
