In July 1985, through arrangement with the owner, the excavation of house foundation trenches was monitored at the site of Cartron Castle near Athlone. Though the castle is named and marked on the first and third editions of the 6" O.S. maps for Co. Roscommon, no trace of it is visible today. Information from Mr. D.N. Johnson, O.P.W., states that the castle appeared to be late sixteenth-century or early seventeenth-century in date. Prior to the commencement of work the site of the castle was plotted from the O.S. map, and stood some 14.5m from the proposed new house, and probably within the bawn enclosure. Throughout the excavation of the trenches, which went to a depth of 45cm, no trace of any wall foundations or other associated features were visible. Before leaving, arrangements were made for further monitoring of the area, when construction of the front wall and septic tank commences.
