The excavation at Lough Gur is on Knockadoon hill near the eastern shore of the lake. The site consists of 1) a cave and 2) a plateau below the cave entrance. The 1985 season was a test excavation to determine if the area had been occupied in the prehistoric period. Initial results show that there is evidence of occupation on the plateau. This consists of a series of pits, post- and stake-holes. Finds such as pottery and flint suggest a Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date range. To date, there is no evidence for prolonged occupation of the cave.
