A small trial excavation showed that the site had been heavily cultivated, the soil averaging a depth of 0.35m above a decomposed sandstone boulder clay. The line of the ditch was located, with hints of preserved timbers in the interior. A gully, 0.66m wide and 0.15m deep, was cut by a later stone-filled drain, and may have been a structural feature. There were no diagnostic finds.
