Over a two-day period ten trial trenches were excavated by machine on the eastern half of the Market Square. Most of the area of the site had a uniform stratigraphy of 0.50m of hardcore and clay and gravel surfaces overlying a 1m depth of brown clayey soil. Below this level a shallow ditch, 7m wide and 0.9m deep, crossed the site east/west. The slightly organic fill of the ditch produced two sherds of post-medieval brown-glazed earthenware and a sherd from an early 17th-century Westerwald jug.
