The site survey revealed ditches south-east and north-west of the church. These may be associated with the medieval manor of Artaine. The site of the castle is shown north-west 0f the church on the OS. 6” map.
Prior to excavation the east and west gables only of the church were visible, showing window openings in both walls which had been blocked with modern concrete blockwork. A large quantity of early 16th-century glazed floor tiles measuring 20cm square, showing a soldier in armour in relief in the centre panel, was recovered from the disturbed graveyard soil in and around the church.
During the works, the north and south walls of the church were revealed. It is a single-cell structure measuring 11 m by 5.36m internally, with north and south doorways, typical of a small Irish medieval parish church. Excavation at the north doorway revealed two carved sandstone jambs, with stopehamfers, resting directly on the paved threshold, with an associated drain feature. The doorjambs indicate a 13th-/14th-century date for the church.
