This was a test excavation in a proposed development area to the N. of the friary. Below an 18th-century layer, possibly resulting from the ‘landscaping’ of the town, there was evidence of earlier (timber?) buildings in the form of roofing slates and stone-filled foundation trenches overlying thin medieval deposits containing pottery.
