1979:016 - KILNAGRANGE, Waterford

Land drainage works having uncovered some large worked timbers, subsequent excavations in April and May 1979 revealed an extensive deposit of burnt stones and the remains of two wooden troughs. Unfortunately, one of the main drainage trenches had destroyed one trough almost completely, only the west side, 1.8m long, surviving. Though its pit had also been largely destroyed some evidence remained in section on either side of the drain. The second trough, about 5m east of the first, although damaged, was in a better state of preservation but it was incomplete and may have been partially dismantled in antiquity. It measured 1.8m x 15m and was not as well constructed as the first. The deposit of burnt material formed an oval mound some 27m x 14.5m. The exact extent of the mound was obscured by the drainage trenches. Under tile mound deposit was a layer of brushwood under part of which, in turn, was a layer of flat stones placed on the blue-grey gley subsoil.
