In August 1979 a short cist containing human remains was discovered at Bruff/Mountaincommon townlands, near Bruff crossroads, Aghamore, Co. Mayo. The cist was discovered in a field fence on the boundary between the townlands of Bruff and Mountaincommon,3 where the four side stones and the capstones were all visible. The finder, Mr John Brereton, used a metal-detector around the area to determine whether there was any metal in the cist, but none appears to have been found. Mr Brereton also reported the find to the NMI. As the cist was not under immediate threat the site was not excavated, but is now listed in the SMR for County Mayo. Given its above-ground location, it is probable that the cist was originally contained within a cairn, of which the field fence is a remnant.
