Limited excavations were undertaken prior to drainage of the Maigue river beside the Castle. A trial cutting was opened up immediately east of the curtain wall and close to the river bank. A mooring area with a small section of pier wall was uncovered here. Some late 13th-century pottery, two wooden bowls, an armour-piercing arrowhead and numerous pieces of wooden planks and stakes were also found. About 100m down river from the castle over 200 sherds of medieval pottery, probably of 14th-century date, were recovered from a badly disturbed area close to the river bank.
