Limited excavations were undertaken prior to drainage of the Maigue river beside the Castle. A trial cutting was opened up immediately east of the curtain wall and close to the river bank. A mooring area with a small section of pier wall was uncovered here. Some late 13th century pottery, two wooden bowls, an armour-piercing arrowhead and numerous pieces of wooden planks and stakes were also found. About 100m. down river from the castle over 200 sherds of medieval pottery, probably of 14th century date, were recovered from a badly disturbed area close to the river bank.
