Excavation was undertaken at Ferns Castle for a period of six weeks in 1974. The modern ball alley was removed from the south side of the castle and the area of rock cut fosse underneath it was partially excavated. The fill of the fosse contained some C13th southwest French polychrome ware, a few sherds of Ham Green ware and a large quantity of native pottery. Most of the native ware was of late 13th century date. There were however a few sherds of late medieval ware and some post-medieval pottery.
