In January 1973 the National Museum received a report that human remains had been discovered during road-widening operations at Clooncunny, near Strokestown, Co. Roscommon.237 The discovery was reported by Mr T. Lennon, who had been on holidays in the area. According to his report, at least five skeletons were discovered at a depth of c. 1m below ground level. All of the burials were apparently aligned east/west and were spaced approximately 0.6m apart. Part of a skull and long bone (1973:2.1–2) were deposited in the Museum by Mr Lennon. According to the Roscommon County Engineer’s report, however, ‘some bones’ were discovered, and it was not clear whether these were human. He also stated that local tradition held that a monastery was located in this area. The SMR for County Roscommon notes ‘Burials’ in Clooncunny townland238 (Fredengren, forthcoming).
