During Autumn 1972 a burial mound at Baunogenasraid was excavated. Originally it consisted of a circular tumulus about 22m in diameter and 4m high but this had been disturbed by bulldozing. Ten simple interments were discovered in the upper levels of the mound (five cremations, five inhumations) but apart from a single flint flake of plano-convex type no grave goods occurred. A food vessel rescued from the bulldozer spoil, however, allows the conclusion that the ten burials belong to the Early Bronze Age.
The discovery under the earthen mound of a massive cist, covered by a heavy capstone and centrally placed in a supporting cairn of stones came as somewhat of a surprise. Inside the cist the disarticulated, unburnt remains of a male adult “of exceptional size” were found accompanied by a finely decorated, round-bottomed bowl of Linkardstown type and a small perforated object of jet or lignite.
