The threatened removal of this large ring-work occasioned an excavation in April of this year. It is of platform type with few surface indications of its surrounding ditch. The only internal features discovered were traces of shallow parallel gullies, which penetrated the boulder clay to a maximum depth of under 6m. These could best be explained as traces of lazy-bed cultivation. Sectioning of the defences on the W showed that on this side at least the ditch had been re-cut and filled with loose stones to serve as a field drain. The upcast ditch fill had been thrown on top of the bank to heighten it. Examination of the bank showed that the resulting increased height and greater steepness of slope extended around most of the western half of the perimeter.
