In May 1969 the NMI received a letter stating that a cist may have been discovered during the Civil War when a dugout was being excavated at Achill Sound, Co. Mayo.184 The letter described how the men dug down to a depth of approximately 1.4m when they came across ‘stones standing on ends on both side’. A number of skulls and some human bone were apparently also found. The bone was replaced where it was found and the area covered over. As the dugout had been excavated at night, no further details as to the disposition of the remains or the size of the cist were noted. Without any details of the grave dimensions it is not possible to state whether this is a prehistoric or later grave.
