In May 1969 human remains were discovered during quarrying operations in a sandpit at Cradockstown West, near Naas, Co. Kildare.123 The site was a large sandpit in a flat field, and was being mechanically excavated by Roadstone Ltd. The burial was at a depth of 0.8m below ground level, in a section 7.5m high. Most of the remains had fallen into the pit before they could be closely examined by the finders. The loose bones were collected, and the lower legs, which had remained in the section, were also removed before the site was investigated. The site was reported to the Museum by the Gardaí at Naas and was subsequently investigated by John Waddell. As all of the bone had been removed, all that remained for examination was a shallow pit dug into relatively fine sand. The remaining portion of the pit measured 0.8m long by 0.6m wide. According to the finders, the body had been aligned west/east. There was no evidence for stone protection around the body, nor were any associated artefacts found. No other burials were noticeable in the face of the pit. The remains were not acquired by the Museum but were reburied locally.
