In February 1967 human remains were discovered during the digging of a trench off Baggot Street in Dublin city centre.76 The work was being carried out by the ESB, who informed the Gardaí of the find. Some of the human remains had been removed to Pearse Street Garda Station, and the NMI was subsequently informed. A brief investigation was carried out by Breandán Ó Ríordáin. According to his report, the bone was found at a depth of 0.56m below the pavement. Some bones were present in the face of the cutting, but in order to excavate them it would have been necessary to extend the cutting into the street and break through the concrete paving. It was decided that the find did not warrant this type of investigation. Two days later the NMI was contacted by the coroner, who had discovered a trephination in one of the skull fragments recovered by the Gardaí. According to the coroner, the operation had been carried out using a comparatively modern instrument and he was of the opinion that the skull was from a teaching collection. The human remains were not retained.
