In December 1964 human remains were discovered during quarrying operations at a sandpit at Ballyneety near Shanagolden, Co. Limerick.162 The surface of the pit was being skimmed in advance of quarrying and it was during this process that at least seven skeletons were discovered at a depth of 0.6–0.9m. The site was reported to the Gardaí, who informed the National Museum. As the site was not investigated by Museum personnel, this account is based on the report of Garda Browne and Garda O’Dare of Shanagolden station. The burials were described as being extended, with the heads to the west, in a row. There do not appear to have been any associated artefacts, nor was there evidence of grave structures. The remains were not acquired by the Museum but appear to have been reinterred locally.

162. Parish of Kilbradran, barony of Shanid. SMR LI028-188——. IGR (approximate) 128330 142411. According to Garda Browne’s report, the burials were in the townland of Ballyegny, but his description of where the site was on the map would place it in Ballyneety townland.
