In February 1964 a number of human skeletons were discovered during quarrying operations in a sandpit at Ballymaley, near Ennis, Co. Clare.51 The pit was being worked by Clare County Council and was reported to the local Gardaí. The discovery was published in the Irish Independent newspaper of 29 February 1964. According to the finder, six skeletons were discovered in the sandpit, close to the surface. Three skeletons were found in one pit, and the other three appeared to have been buried individually. There was no evidence of any stone lining or pottery fragments in the vicinity. No investigation of the site took place.

51. Parish of Templemaley, barony of Bunratty Upper. SMR CL033-174——. The exact find-spot of the skeletons is not known, but the townland of Ballymaley extends over OS 6in. sheets 25, 26, 33 and 34.
