In September 1962 a human skeleton was discovered during quarrying operations at a gravel pit at Mountflorence, near Athlone, Co. Roscommon,240 on the border between counties Roscommon and Westmeath. The work was being carried out on behalf of the Irish Land Commission, and the remains were apparently given into the custody of the Gardaí at Athlone. They were found at a depth of 0.6m below ground level, apparently in an extended position. No associated artefacts were found and the remains were reinterred.
