In June 1960 human remains were discovered during land reclamation at Rathmore, near Ballymahon, Co. Longford.175 The bones were found in various parts of a field known locally as Friary Field and thought to be the site of a monastery. According to the report, the field was approximately seven acres in size and had been covered by bushes for years. The bones appear to have been reinterred by the finder. Two months after the discovery, the site was reported to the Gardaí at Athlone, who informed the NMI. The landowner was not certain whether the remains were human or animal, and when the Gardaí visited the site no bones were visible on the surface, and the landowner was not able to recall the exact location of the remains. The site was not inspected and no human remains were acquired. The SMR does not record any ecclesiastical site for this townland.
