In July 1959 human remains were discovered by workmen on the grounds of St Cleran’s House, in the townland of Saintclerans near Loughrea, Co. Galway.111 The site was visited by Professor Michael Duignan, who reported it to the NMI. No further details were recorded.
111. Parish of Lickerrig, barony of Dunkellin. SMR GA097-146004—. Duignan mentions the townlands of Dunsandle and Saintclerans. Nevertheless, it is presumed that the burial was in the townland of Saintclerans, given that the burial was apparently found on the grounds of St Cleran’s. No church is listed in the SMR for this townland. According to Duignan, however, the burials were found on the north side of the house, to the east of the ‘last remnants of a small church whose masonry looks medieval’.
