In February 1954 human remains were discovered by workers for Donegal County Council digging for sand on Cruit Island, Cruit Upper,62 near Burtonport, Co. Donegal. The body appears to have been extended in an unlined pit dug into sand and gravel. The site was reported to the GardaĆ at Burtonport, who informed the NMI. The site was not visited, however, and the human remains were reinterred. No associated grave-goods or gravemarkers were found. According to local legend, a sailor was washed ashore here and was buried in the vicinity.
