In August 1951 human remains were discovered during drainage works at Keelkill, near Castlebar, Co. Mayo.188 The work was being carried out under the Land Project Scheme and was reported to the Gardaí at Castlebar. The remains were found at a depth of approximately 1.5m and consisted of a skull and some other bones. The discovery was reported to the NMI by the Gardaí but was not investigated.
