In September 1948 human remains were discovered during roadworks at Rockfleet, near Westport, Co. Mayo.194 The remains were largely destroyed but a number of bone fragments were collected by Sir Owen O’Malley of Westport, who forwarded the remains to Professor C.A. Erskine, who in turn gave the remains to Dr Raftery. The bone was discovered at a depth of 0.6–0.9m below ground level. The burial appears to have been fully extended and aligned west/east. No associated artefacts or stone slabs were visible in the vicinity of the remains. The bone was returned to Sir Owen O’Malley to be reburied locally. The site was not investigated by the NMI.

194. Parish and barony of Burrishoole. OS 25in. sheet 67. The SMR lists a burial from this townland (MA067- 02503; IGR 93004 295234) which appears to be close to the area indicated by Sir Owen O’Malley.
