On 29 June 1947 an extended human skeleton was discovered at Doon, near Sneem, Co. Kerry,22 by Mr Domhnall Ó Donnchadha, who was hunting rabbits on Doon hill. The remains were discovered approximately 0.3m below ground level. The grave is described as consisting of a number of small flat stones forming a grave and containing an extended skeleton aligned on an east/west axis.23 The head is described as being oriented ‘eastwards’, which may indicate that the head was to the west, facing east. No associated artefacts were found in the grave. The site was not investigated by the NMI and the remains were returned to the grave.

22. Parish of Kilcrohane, barony of Dunkerron South. SMR KE0910-116——. The exact location of the site is not known. The SMR does not list any sites in the townland.
23. In subsequent correspondence the Gardaí expressed doubt as to the presence of a long cist, and stated that the stones were similar to others in the area, and may actually have come from above the grave.
