In March 1942 human remains were discovered during roadworks on the Navan road at Slane townland, Slane, Co. Meath.218 The site was described as being about ‘100 yards’ from Slane village. The remains were found at a maximum depth of 0.38m below ground level. The site was reported to the Museum by Professor R.A.S. Macalister, who had been informed of the find by the Gardaí at Slane. Joseph Raftery carried out a site visit. The site lay beside the road on the base of a steep incline ‘between the 150 foot and the 200 foot contours’. Seven burials were noted. They were extended and in a supine position, with their alignment varying from east/west to north/south. They were about 9m from the base of a brick and mortar structure. According to Raftery, the burials appeared to have taken place in a hurried manner. The remains were not acquired by the Museum.
