In November 1940 human remains were discovered during the construction of a new road by the Land Commission at Coolalough, near Kilbeggan, Co. Westmeath.284 The remains were found at a depth of c. 0.6m below ground level in a pit approximately 1.8m long.285 According to the foreman on the site, there were no associated artefacts or slabs in the vicinity. The site was visited by the Gardaí at Kilbeggan, who sent the bones (1940:313) and a report to the NMI.
