In January 1939 human remains and portions of a quernstone were discovered during the construction of a roadway to a dwelling house at Kilconnaught, near Hacketstown, Co. Carlow.47 The remains were found approximately 0.3m below ground level and were apparently in poor condition. The find was reported to the NMI by Liam Price. From the finder’s description, the body appears to have been extended, with the head to the north and feet to the south. No accompanying artefacts were found with the body. Some ten days after this discovery, a hearth was apparently found approximately 5m north-east of the burial. The ashes covered a circular area about 0.3m across by 0.13m deep. The basal deposit in the hearth was red, while the upper layer was a black charcoal-like substance. Part of a saddle quern, some iron nails and pieces of corroded iron (1939:362–374) also found in the vicinity may be indications of domestic activity at various periods in the area.48
