Archaeological test trenching was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development at Lambert Place, Wexford Town, Co. Wexford. The site is located within the Zone of Notification for Wexford Historic Town.
Three test trenches (Trenches 1, 3 and 4) were excavated under archaeological supervision. A fourth proposed trench (Trench 2) was not excavated due to the restricted nature of the site, including the presence of ESB poles, mature tree roots and limited working space. The trenches provided representative coverage of the accessible development footprint.
The excavated stratigraphy consisted of topsoil and modern made ground containing twentieth-century demolition material, including brick, mortar, rubble, glass and a modern concrete slab, overlying natural clay subsoil. Natural deposits varied from yellow-brown clay to compact grey-blue silty clay, with evidence of gleying and localised water ingress at depth. No finds or objects or features of archaeological significance were exposed in the test trenches.
