2026:239 - Vinegar Hill, Templeshannon, Wexford

A programme of archaeological monitoring and metal detection was undertaken of groundworks associated with the improvement and upgrading of walking paths along the western side of Vinegar hill, in the townland of Templshannon, Co. Wexford. Archaeological monitoring and metal detection was undertaken by archaeologists Barry Lacey and Breda Walsh from 28 April to 1 May 2026. The works were commissioned due to the site’s location within a recorded battlefield associated with the 1798 rebellion (RMP No: WX020-118).
Upgrading and improvement works comprised topsoil stripping and the laying down of stone along a new trail running south from Vinegar Hill Lane. In addition to these works it was decided to also upgrade two smaller trail sections running west from the primary trail toward Colaiste Bríde secondary school.
Archaeological monitoring did not uncover any features, deposits or objects of archaeological significance during the course of works. A number of pottery sherds and iron objects of a post-medieval date were recovered and maybe associated with historic cultivation and manuring in that area of the hill. Similarly, they may be a result of accidental loss or discarding of individual fragments rather than a dedicated deposition of domestic waste. All finds were of a post-medieval date and not recommended for retention.
