Archaeological testing was undertaken on a site at Ballymacgibbon North, Cross, Co. Mayo. A desktop assessment undertaken in October 2025 by Bart Korfanty of Archer Heritage Planning Ltd recommended archaeological test trenching in available greenspace. Archaeological test excavation was undertaken on 26 January 2026.
A total of 380 linear meters of test trenches were mechanically excavated across the site under constant archaeological supervision. The topsoil was a loose and friable mid-brown clay/loam. The topsoil overlay a compact light-yellow brown stony clay subsoil at a depth of 0.25-0.45m. There was a substantial amount of underlying natural stone encountered in some locations (mainly the southern portion of trench T3).
No archaeological finds or features were recorded. No further works are required.
