Archaeological monitoring of groundworks associated with the refurbishment of a derelict cottage, the construction of an extension to the rear of the cottage, and all ancillary works, at Ballylarkin Upper townland, near Freshford, Co. Kilkenny, was carried out on 2 June 2026.
The site is located partially within the Zone of Notification (Zone ID: R139693) for a deserted medieval settlement complex (KK013-017—-).
Monitored works comprised topsoil stripping in the proposed development footprint.
A sod layer 0.1m deep, overlay topsoil comprising a moderately compact dark brown silty clay with occasional small sub-rounded stones. The topsoil had an average depth of c. 0.12m. The topsoil overlay natural subsoil comprising a compact, orange to light-brown silty clay with occasional small-sized sub-rounded stones.
No archaeological finds, features, or deposits were identified during the monitored groundworks.
