Archaeological monitoring was undertaken of groundworks on a site at Cullairbaun, Athenry, Co. Galway. A desk-based assessment was conducted in July 2023 (Korfanty, 2023) which recommended Geophysical Survey and Archaeological Test Trenching. Geophysical survey (24R0532) took place in November 2024 this was followed by Archaeological Test Trenching (24E1242) in December 2024.
During the archaeological monitoring of groundworks the first portion of topsoil was removed from the north-west half of the site exposing underlying geology comprised mostly of sands and gravels. The topsoil (dark-brown, organic rich silty-clay) varied from 0.3m to 0.5m in depth. The second part of topsoil removal took place on the south-east half of the site. The subsoil here comprised dark yellowish-grey clay and silty-clay. The topsoil varied from 0.35m to 0.45m in depth.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of monitoring. No further works are required.
