Archaeological investigation at the site consisted of the excavation of three test trenches across the footprint of a proposed residential property. The archaeological assessment was deemed necessary due to its location within the zone of notification associated with RMP DU021-010—- that now includes a ritual site – holy well (DU021-010001-), inscribed stone (DU021-010002-) and children’s burial ground (DU021-010003-); these are also listed as Protected Structure RPS 170, listed in the South Dublin Development Plan 2022-2028.
The front yard of the property contained no topsoil, and the existing ground consisted of concrete paving slabs, which were removed to excavate Trench 1. Below was a mixed rubble fill measuring 0.4m in depth until no evidence of modern fabrics was found. This undisturbed layer was heavily compacted, light brownish-grey stoney subsoil.
To the rear of the property, sod and topsoil measured 0.35m in Trench 2 and 0.38m in Trench 3. Both were overlaying the same undisturbed deposit seen in Trench 1. Trench 3 contained modern services running north-south across the trench.
No archaeological features or deposits were identified during the course of the test excavations.
