Archaeological monitoring of the replacement of a Magnefix Substation Unit at Castle Street, Dalkey, Co. Dublin was requested as the Substation Unit is situated within the zone of notification (ZON) of Dalkey historic town, DU023-023.

The monitoring was undertaken over one day at the end of April 2026. The excavation works were carried out by hand and mini digger and ultimately, a small cutting (c.4m x c.4m x c.0.7m in depth) was excavated, exposing water and ESB services connections. Excavated material comprised of rubble/backfilled material with moderate stones inclusions.

A short section of a modern boundary wall was revealed on the east side of the cutting at a depth of 0.55m. The exposed section of wall measured 1.2m in length and 0.6m in width and constructed with dry stone granite blocks. Although the recorded wall was interpreted as a modern feature, it was decided to preserve it in situ and locate the new Substation unit just to the west, beside the remains of boundary walling.

Nothing of archaeological interest and no artefacts were recovered during monitoring at Castle Street in Dalkey.
