2026:162 - Farranboley, Dundrum, Dublin

Archaeological testing was carried on the site of a permitted development in the townland of Farranboley, Co. Dublin to ascertain its archaeological potential. The site comprised a greenfield area south of Emmet House on the Dundrum Road. A total of seven test trenches were excavated across the site measuring c. 285 linear metres. Agricultural cultivation furrows were recorded across the site indicating agricultural activity at this location during the post-medieval period. A single feature identified in Trench 1 contained soft brown silty clay fill overlying a deposit of stones. Beneath the deposit, a layer of gravelly grey clay was identified. Hand-excavation was undertaken to further investigate this feature, which resulted in water ingress. Fragments of 19th-century creamware were retrieved from between the stones, indicating that this feature likely represents a natural spring or wet spot that was infilled in the 19th century to facilitate cultivation in the area. No deposits, features or artefacts of archaeological significance were recorded within the trenches. However, the site does demonstrate post-medieval agricultural/cultivational activity during the 19th century in Farranboley townland.
