2025:531 - Mullinacuff Church, Wicklow

Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during conservation works at Mullinacuff Church and Graveyard in 2024 and 2025. Phase 1 works were completed in November 2024 and Phase 2 between July and September 2025. The project was funded under Stream 1 of the Community Monuments Fund.

The site comprises a recorded church (WI043-002001), graveyard (WI043-002002) and font (WI043-002003), situated in the townland of Stranakelly, approximately 4.7km west of Tinahely, Co. Wicklow. The enclosed graveyard occupies an elevated position at the end of a stone-lined laneway and retains panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Works involved the conservation and consolidation of the standing church fabric, repair of the entrance gate and boundary wall, and resetting of entrance pillars. All loose and displaced stone was sorted; material suitable for reuse was incorporated into the repairs, while remaining stone was retained on site in gabion baskets.

Monitoring confirmed that the works were confined to disturbed or previously consolidated areas. No in situ archaeological deposits were impacted, and no artefacts requiring conservation were recovered.
