Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in 2025 during Phase 1 stabilisation works at Drumgoff Barracks, a three-storey early nineteenth-century military structure associated with the Wicklow Military Road. The works focused on the east end of the building, where significant structural instability had developed. This work was funded through the CMF under Stream 1 CMF25-1-WI001.

Monitoring exposed a flat rubble-masonry vault at first-floor level supported on a central spine wall, together with a red-brick segmental arch forming the entrance to the adjoining western room and a granite staircase.

Material removed during clearance consisted primarily of collapsed structural fabric, including rubble stone, degraded mortar, concrete block from later interventions, and architectural fragments associated with a former stair. No stratified archaeological deposits were identified. All stone and architectural material was sorted and retained on site for potential reuse or future cataloguing.

The works identified continued outward movement of the east gable. Temporary propping was installed, and further structural restraint measures will be developed under Phase 2, subject to funding and consultation with the National Monuments Service.
