Archaeological monitoring of topsoil stripping in keeping with the conditions of a grant of planning by An Bord Pleanála was carried out under licence 22E0506 (and subsequent extensions) during phased construction of a large Strategic Housing Development at Fort Road, Gorey, Co. Wexford, within the townland of Ballowen or Ramsfortpark.
The site was divided into 6 construction phases, Phases 1-6, which were not necessarily developed in discrete blocks; haul roads and shifting compound locations during construction required partial monitoring of topsoil stripping in some phase areas prior to bulk topsoil stripping of the phases. Monitoring was carried out between 16 August 2022 and 19 August 2025.
No archaeological finds, features or deposits were identified during the monitored works.
Modern era French drains were identified to the east side of the site, in the Phase 4 and Phase 5 areas, in part of the site that is shown on historic Ordnance Survey maps as being historically planted with trees. The drains, orientated generally north-south and parallel with the eastern boundary of the site, were possibly created in the latter half of the 19th century when the trees were cleared and the land converted to agricultural use.
