Full planning permission was applied for to construct a dwelling house with domestic garage, connection to services and to carry out all ancillary site development works at The Walk, Roscommon Town, Co. Roscommon, located 1.2 km northeast of the town centre. Due to the fact that the proposal lay within the zone of archaeological potential established around Recorded Monuments RO039-044—- (Designed landscape – avenue) an archaeological assessment of the development site was requested.
Nothing of archaeological significance was uncovered in the testing with the results showing that the amount of agricultural activity in the relatively recent past had removed all traces of the 19th-century cottage and garden along with any other archaeological deposits which wewre recorded on the Ordnance Survey map of 1837. As a consequence it was recommended, subject to discussion with and the approval of the relevant heritage authorities, that should the project receive planning permission, no further archaeological involvement was required.
