A programme of archaeological testing was commissioned at a site in Lackan townland, Portrunny, Co. Roscommon. The proposed development comprises a fisheries base and is located 2.7km northeast of Knockcroghery village and 7.69km southeast of Roscommon in a greenfield site. The site is located partly within the zone of archaeological potential established around RO042-168001- (Ritual site - holy well), RO042-168002- (Ritual site - holy tree/bush), RO042-044001- (Church), RO042-044002- (Graveyard) and RO042-044003- (House - indeterminate date). There are no sites of architectural significance within or in the vicinity of the project area.

Four roughly east-west aligned trenches were excavated, and 4 roughly north-south aligned trenches were excavated within the footprint of the proposed development. The stratigraphy encountered was consistent throughout and comprised topsoil and sod up to 400mm in depth. This overlays a compact mid-brown natural subsoil which was present throughout the site. Nothing of archaeological significance was noted
