| Archaeological testing was undertaken in association with a proposed development (‘Site 14’) at Ballymakenny Road, Yellowbatter, Drogheda, Co.Louth. Test trenching commenced at the site on 22 April 2025 and continued for three days. A total of 5 trenches were mechanically investigated across the test area which measured 590 linear metres in total. Testing revealed two areas of archaeological significance, which have been designated as Archaeological Areas 1 and 2 (AA1 and AA2). Both sites may be inter-related based on relative proximity (c. 30m distance) and appear to represent prehistoric burnt mound activity. These comprise a cluster of three pits in AA1 and one spread of fulacht fiadh or burnt mound material in AA2. Evidence for agricultural activity was also uncovered in the form of field boundaries and furrows. |
