The site at Piperstown, Co. Louth, was archaeologically assessed and involved the excavation of ten trenches, each measuring 1.8m in width with a total of 171m of linear trenches excavated. The site was subjected to a geophysical survey under licence 25R0069 (Murphy 2025) prior to testing, and geophysical anomalies that could represent potential spread/pits were recorded.
The trenches were positioned to assess the geophysical anomalies and the archaeological potential across the site within areas of proposed development. One of the geophysical anomalies was geological in nature and there was no obvious explanation for the second anomaly. The subsoil was exposed in all trenches below the sod and topsoil/plough soil at an average depth of 0.3m. It consisted of a yellow-grey sandy boulder clay with moderate amounts of stone. Several stone-filled land drains were evident across the site, cut into the subsoil. Excavation of the trenches failed to identify any archaeological features or finds.
The work is now complete, and no further mitigation is necessary.
