This green field site that lies in the north-west of Dunleer village was excavated in advance of development. A Recorded Monument: LH018-016 classified as a holy well, is marked on the eastern edge of the site (ITM 70558, 788375). The OS letters refer to a well dedicated to St Comghall and ‘Toberccole’ that was marked on the 1865 OS map. It could not be located when inspected in 1967. A total of 12 test trenches were excavated across the site with one located in the north-eastern corner at the possible location of the holy well. The sod and plough soil extended on average to a depth of 0.4m and directly overlay natural subsoil. This varied from a sandy stony orange boulder clay to a stony grey gravel that was prevalent across the centre of the site. No archaeological features were exposed, and no finds were recovered.
Trenching failed to reveal any trace of the monument. The testing is now complete, and no further archaeological work is required.
