Two test trenches were excavated. at St Francis Abbey to accommodate piers to support the installation of gates and fencing. The abbey is a recorded monument and National Monument in state care (KK019-026101, Nat Mon No. 72). The site is located within the townland of Gardens (St Mary’s Parish) in Kilkenny City. The works had been granted as an extension to Ministerial Consent C001227 (under Section 14 of the National Monuments Acts) and Condition No. 6 required archaeological testing of the foundation sockets for the proposed piers in advance of the commencement of works.

A review of the project design by the Office of Public Works (OPW) resulted in the excavation of Trenches 2 and 3 only. Investigations uncovered mixed layers associated with modern disturbance. An area of stone bonded with lime mortar was partially exposed within Trench 3 and was preserved in situ. Nothing further of archaeological significance was uncovered.
