Archaeological monitoring of site investigation test pits and boreholes was carried out on behalf of Cumming Group on behalf of PI Hotels & Restaurants Ireland Ltd. at Urban Block 5, Abbey Quarter, Kilkenny. The site investigations were carried out in advance of purchase of the site for a proposed hotel.

The archaeological monitoring of test pits revealed river gravels at c. 3.1–3.5m below present ground level. These are overlain directly by redeposited post-medieval material dating to the late 17th or early 18th century.

The boreholes also revealed material datable to the post-medieval period. The depths of these deposits did not exceed 4m.
