2025:664 - Caltragh, Galway

The archaeological monitoring of  ground disturbance associated with the development of a walking trail in Caltragh townland, on Knockma Hill in north County Galway, was completed on 19 September 2025.  The work involved the c. 18m extension of an existing trail to facilitate access to a cross, GA042-064005, located close to the top of Knockma Hill.  The removal of topsoil 18m x 1.2m was undertaken by a mechanical excavator utilising a flat/ditching bucket. The stratigraphy consisted of sod 0.20-0.25m deep overlying a natural grey/orange silt. No finds or features of archaeological significance were encountered.
