Archaeological monitoring was undertaken on a site at St Molaga’s SNS, Balbriggan, Co. Dublin. A desk-based assessment conducted in January 2020 (Coen, 2020) which recommended Geophysical Survey and Archaeological testing. Geophysical survey (20R0149) followed by Test Trenching (24E0447) took place in August 2020. Nothing of archaeological significance was recorded in the course of these works.
The proposed development is located adjacent to the Zone of Notification for Bremore Castle (DU002-00201) and partially within the Zone of Notification for St Molaga’s Church and graveyard (DU002-00201-06). As such, archaeological monitoring of all future ground works was recommended.
Archaeological monitoring of groundworks took place from 10 November to 8 December 2025 under Licence No 24E0447 ext. The topsoil was removed across the entire northern green space. Topsoil varied slightly between parts of the field (0.2-0.35m deep). The subsoil was mottled mid- to light orange-brown compact stony clay with frequent stone and root inclusions. Foundations were also excavated to a depth of between 0.5m and 1m in depth.
No features, finds or deposits of archaeological significance were identified during the course of monitoring. No further works are required.
